Dining halls move to shining halls: Upscale dining arrives at Weinstein, Rubin

Proving again to be the utmost innovator, CampusDish unveiled two new dining developments: the opening of a rooftop buffet service atop Weinstein residence hall called the Weinstein Bistro (Roofstein), and the demolition of Rubin dining hall whose space will be replaced with student favorites Panda Express, Jamba Juice, brunch catering services from The Waldorf Astoria Hotel’s Peacock Alley and Le Bernardin.

Weinstein residence hall is already home to the Weinstein dining hall and food court, which serve up concoctions by Quiznos and Chick-fil-A as well as healthy salads and frozen yogurt.

Bistro menu items will include dishes such as butternut squash gnocchi and foie gras torchon. The décor of the dining space reflects that of a homey and earthy garden; terracotta pots will line the outdoor space, and students will be seated at candlelit wicker tables after sunset.

Students will also have the opportunity to experience diverse dishes in the newly renovated dining space in Rubin Hall — delectable items such as fruit smoothies from Jamba Juice and orange chicken from Panda Express will be within easy reach. Sumptuous Sunday brunch from Peacock Alley will also be catered in this new space, and students can browse the omelete, smoked fish, caviar and carving stations.

Owen Moore, director of dining services, has been an integral figure in this project.

“Students should be able to sample the most incredible cuisines with a single meal swipe,” he said. “These dining hall additions are truly inspiring to the stomach and to the mind.”

Tisch sophomore Hannah Horvath said in the press release, “The only reason I came to NYU was because of the five-star dining experience.”

I lived in Rubin in the early 1980’s. I cannot believe how self-indulgent today’s students are in comparison. Carving Stations? Spare me.
