On Nov. 9, the men’s team kicked its season off with an impressive 86-74 win over Babson College.
After a tightly contested first half, the Violets were unstoppable behind the arc, making 71% of their three-point attempts in the second half to put the game out of reach.
Senior Zay Freeney and graduate transfer Jack Stone led the three-point onslaught, with Freeney sinking two and Stone adding three. Freeney ended the game with 16 points, celebrating his 1,000th career point for NYU early in the second half.
On Sunday, Nov. 10, the Violets took down Rowan University 102-78. Graduate student Tristan How, a transfer from the University of Virginia, helped the team to victory, totaling 26 points.
The men’s team takes on Kean College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 in Union, NJ.
On Friday, Nov. 8 the women’s squad outscored its way past the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 80-39 in the opening game of the Scholars Classic played at the Paulson Center.
The defending champions shut down the Beavers on defense, forcing 32 turnovers and holding MIT to an abysmal 25.5% shooting from the field.
Graduate student Natalie Bruns led the way for the Violets’ defensive efforts recording four blocks and three steals as well as scoring 13 points on the offensive side of the ball.
The women’s team then took on Babson College on the second day of the tournament on Saturday, Nov. 9, adding to its winning streak 65-36.
The Violets took advantage of their ability to create stops on the defense and play in transition, tallying 29 points off of Babson turnovers. Last year’s Defensive Player of the Year and senior Belle Pellecchia led the way for the Violets, scoring 16 points and getting three steals.
The women’s team returns to action against Kean University at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Paulson Center.
Volleyball
NYU women’s volleyball swept both of their matchups this week, taking to the road to defeat both Hunter College and Montclair State University 3-0 on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
The Violets dominated their opening set against Hunter, winning 25-11 after an 11-1 run. Sophomore Grace Nelson closed the set with three back-to-back kills, ending the game with a total of 10.
Despite the Violets starting the second set with a 12-2 lead, the Hawks managed to get within three points of tying — but NYU scored three unanswered points to win the set 25-20 with first-year Chloe Hynes closing the set with a kill.
The Violets took the third and final set of the game 25-13 after scoring four unanswered points.
In their final regular season matchup of the season against Montclair State University, the Violets took control of the first set — going on a 13-3 run to come out on top 25-13.
The results of the second and third set told a very similar story, with NYU winning 25-16 and 25-8. Hynes ended the game with an impressive 12 kills, while sophomores Nelson and Catherine Maffei and junior Jessica Spierenburg recorded seven each.
The Violets take on Washington University in the first round of the eight-team UAA Championship at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 in Rochester, NY.
Soccer
The men’s soccer team lost 1-0 to UAA rival Brandeis University on Nov. 9 in its final match of the regular season in Waltham, MA. The Violets outshot the Judges 16-13, but Brandeis goalkeeper Quintin Wrabley made five saves to keep NYU out for the win.
Ending the regular season on a three-game losing streak, the Violets finished with a record of 6-6-3, falling short of NCAA D-III tournament eligibility.
The 18th-ranked women’s team played next, defeating the Judges 2-1 on Saturday, Nov. 9 and concluding their regular season with 10 wins, two losses and six draws.
After conceding an early goal in the 23rd minute, NYU stormed back in the 52nd minute with a goal from graduate student Kelli Keady, assisted by junior Eileen Xu. The goal marks Keady’s seventh of the season and 29th of her career — tied for second of all time for NYU.
Sophomore Carmen Cicerini followed up with the go-ahead goal for the Violets in the 80th minute.
On Monday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m., the NCAA will announce the women’s soccer teams for the Division III Championship tournament, with NYU still in contention.
Wrestling
On Nov. 9, the wrestling team claimed first place at the Racich Rumble in Collegeville, PA. The wrestlers won their second tournament title of the season — finishing 30 points ahead of second-place Washington and Lee University with 158.5 points in the 15-team tournament.
Graduate student Trent Furman, senior Cooper Pontelandolfo, first-year Tyler Kadish and junior transfer Harrison Gordon finished first in their respective weight brackets.
Furman tallied his 100th career victory for the Violets in a win against Ganon Smith of Elizabethtown College.
NYU will host the Metropolitan Duals competition on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Paulson Center. The Violets are slated to compete against Hunter College, the United States Merchant Marine Academy and New Jersey City University.
