Basketball
The men’s and women’s basketball teams faced off against the University of Chicago at home on Friday. The fast-paced men’s game came down to the wire, tied 59-59 with less than a minute left. After a UChicago timeout at the 0.5-second mark, sophomore Hampton Sanders inbounded the ball to a cutting graduate student Brock Susko, who made a buzzer-beater layup to give the Violets the victory 61-59.
The women’s team beat UChicago 80-58, to earn their 50th consecutive victory, the longest active streak in the NCAA. Junior Caroline Peper was on fire with 22 points in 30 minutes on the court, and senior Belle Pellecchia and graduate student Natalie Bruns followed up closely with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Both teams return to the home court in the Paulson Center on Sunday, Feb. 9, to play Washington University in St. Louis.
Fencing
The women’s fencing team put up a strong Saturday performance in the Beguinet Classic, hosted by Duke University. The No. 21-ranked Violets won four of their six matches, only losing to No. 18-ranked the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and No. 25-ranked John Hopkins University.
Led by the epee squad of first-year Katherine Chen, graduate student Karina Dyner and first-year Azniv Basralian, the Violets achieved victories against No.13-ranked Boston College, No. 24-ranked Air Force Academy, No. 28-ranked Brandeis University and No. 1-ranked University of Notre Dame.
The women’s fencing team will compete on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Columbia University for a quad-meet with Vassar College, Sacred Heart University and host Columbia University.
Track & Field
On Friday, Feb. 7, both the men’s and women’s track & field teams traveled to Staten Island to compete in the FastTrack National Invitational.
Sophomore distance runner Julian Aske broke the NYU record of 4:06.00 by earning a time of 4:05.54 in the mile.
There was also a myriad of personal bests among both teams: first-year Katharine Frank finishing at 2:23.53 in the 800m run, sophomore Lincoln Tutor running it at 53.68 in the 400m dash, junior Samir Hussain championing 9:14.84 in the 3,000m run and sophomore Flynt Whitworth showing up for the sprints team with 22.89 in the 200m dash.
After the FastTrack Invitational on Friday, the teams returned to Staten Island on Saturday to compete in the Big Apple Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
For the jumps team, graduate student Oliver Fideler took first in the long jump with a mark of 6.79m — a little over 22 feet. Three triple jumpers placed in their respective events: junior Drew Boyce jumping 12.43m, junior Dasha Jackson marking 11.25m and junior Areyanna McCarthy following closely with 11.15m.
Next Friday, Feb. 14, both teams will head off to Boston to compete in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University — the second-to-last meet before the UAA Indoor Championships.
Volleyball
The men’s volleyball team was scheduled to play Ramapo College on Thursday, but the match was postponed due to weather in Mahwah, New Jersey. It has not yet been rescheduled.
The Violets are at home on Wednesday to face off against Stevens Institute of Technology at 7 p.m.
Wrestling
The wrestling team traveled to New London, Connecticut, to compete in the NY/New England Duals hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
The Violets dropped the first dual to the USCGA despite senior Cooper Pontelandolfo and junior Harrison Gordon earning major decisions. Graduate student Trent Furman picked up a regular decision, but it wasn’t enough, with the team falling 29-11.
NYU dominated the second dual against Bridgewater State University, with Pontelandolfo, Furman and first-year James Carlock earning tech falls. Senior Nick Kruczynski and junior Evan Anderson recorded pins and sophomore John Mairano registered bonus points with a major decision.
The wrestling team will compete in the UAA Championship at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, Feb. 15.
