NYU recorded a decline in hate crimes, rape and motor vehicle theft on its Washington Square campus in 2024, according to its most recent Campus Security and Fire Safety Report. The annual report, mandated by U.S. law, also detailed an uptick in crime at the Brooklyn campus and included a new section about hazing.
Disciplinary referrals for drug law violations on the Washington Square campus dropped from 75 to 51 in 2024. Earlier this month, 19 people were arrested for involvement in a drug networking ring in Washington Square Park, a result of a task force NYU joined in March to address quality-of-life issues related to mental health, drug use and homelessness.
Campus Safety associate director Matthew Shelosky told WSN that while NYU’s Brooklyn campus saw an increase in crimes such as burglary and sexual assault in 2024, numbers at the site have been down so far in 2025. He added that the department plans to implement targeted safety measures including heavier patrol coverage, expanded control systems — like ID readers and improved turnstiles — and stronger awareness and prevention efforts.
“We are also working closely with local law enforcement and community partners to share information, coordinate responses, and develop joint strategies that deter crime and support the safety and well-being of our community,” Shelosky wrote.
Motor vehicle theft decreased from 35 to 19 on the Washington Square campus while reported hate crimes dropped from four to two. There were eight reports of rape in 2024 — down from nine in 2023, which was triple the number in 2022.
Shelosky told WSN that the university began offering a self-defense course this fall, open monthly to students, faculty and staff. NYU’s Emergency Management Team also conducts monthly threat preparedness training, teaching individuals how to respond and stay safe during crises.
“Campus Safety offers a wide range of programs and services to help students and community members feel safe and empowered, whether they’re on campus or out navigating the city,” Shelosky wrote. “We want all students to know that there are multiple tools and training opportunities available to them throughout the year, both in person and on demand.”
