Starting the financial aid process earlier and accepting older tax returns offer planning benefits to high schoolers as they begin the application process, yet these small FAFSA reforms do little to ease the greatest burden of pursuing a college degree.

The model of the large endowment as “intergenerational stewardship” is more noble and much more sustainable. But in order to attain this model, the administration has a long road ahead of it.
The university has no business asking current and outgoing students for donations, and shouldn’t have to regardless. As he begins his tenure as president of this university, Andrew Hamilton should continue to look toward alumni and donors, rather than current students, to finance NYU.
