NYU women’s golf finished fourth at the Martin/Wallace Invitational this weekend in Ithaca, N.Y. The tournament, hosted by State University of New York at Cortland, was played on the 5,816 yard, par-12 Cortland Country Club course.
After the first round on Saturday, Sept. 29, NYU was in fourth place out of 10 teams and had a total score of 346 strokes. The top three teams were Ithaca College with 319 strokes, St. Lawrence University with 330 and SUNY Cortland with 331. NYU failed to move up after the second day of competition, finishing with two strokes more than the 668 strokes of St. Lawrence University. Ithaca College captured first with 634 strokes while SUNY Cortland was able to take second with 658.
NYU’s top finisher in round one was freshman Elaine Tse who was tied for seventh place with 82 points. Tse went on to finish fourth at the invitational after scoring a 79 on the second day, for a total of 161 strokes.
First place finisher at the invitational was Sharon Li of Ithaca College with 143 total strokes.
Junior captain Kristina Shalhoup had 86 strokes for a 12th place three-way tie in round one, which she was able to bring down to 79 strokes on the second day of competition, garnering her an eighth place finish with a total score of 165.
“I had a very rough first day, playing what I would say is my worst round this fall,” Shalhoup said. “However, I still managed to come back a little today, so I ended on a happier note.”
Freshman Savannah Graham placed 15th with a total score of 171, 87 in round one and 84 in round two.
“As a whole we had a slow start but came back and all improved our scores the second day,” Graham said.
Senior Jiye Kim who had a high of 94 strokes in round one was able to finish with 82 strokes in round two, placing her in 18th place with a total of 176.
Also competing for NYU was sophomore Deanna Lee in 23rd with a total of 178 strokes, and senior Natasha How in 25th, with 180 strokes.
“I’m incredibly proud of the way we battled back as a team after our tough first day” Shalhoup said. “Everyone kept their heads up and held on to an amazing attitude throughout the weekend. It definitely paid off, seeing as we dropped 22 shots from the first day to the second.”
The Violets will play in the Williams Fall Classic in Williamston, Mass. Saturday, Oct. 6 for their final tournament of the season.
