Marimekko Spring/Summer 2013

The pieces from Marimekko’s most recent collection look as if the paintings from the MoMa have been transcribed onto them. Every aspect of the collection, exuded pure modernity.

Hues of bright orange and vivid yellow were splashed across the runway as girls strutted out in their brightly printed converse sneakers and clogs, all smiles and hair pulled back. An array of prints ranging from polka dot to paisley to stripes heading in all direction added to the energetic aesthetic of the clothes so that even a simple white shift dress looked interesting with black scale-like patterns. A sleeveless flowing shift dress in sectioned patterns starting from horizontal strips along the hem to colored circles along the collar with a myriad of other patterns in between was shown alongside a voluminously static short-sleeved silk maxi dress in teal with a watercolor of orange and yellow swirls covering the skirt.

Throwing in the unexpected, the collection even held a few solid colored jackets in black. But fold up the sleeves and a flash of neon yellow peeks out from the interior of the jacket. Hats in equally electrifying patterns and colors topped off the looks. Thick bangles in mustard yellow, fiery red, and lime green were piled onto models’ arms while chunky, bold wooden necklaces composed of triangular and circular shapes dangled off their necks. Creative director Minna Kemell Kutvonen says in regards to the inspiration of each collection, “The guiding light has bee intuition and imagination, with experience and practicality keeping both feet on the ground.” This season’s is no exception, full of the richest forms of creative spontaneity while keeping in mind that this is clothes that people will want to wear.
