Donna Karen Spring/Summer 2013

Donna Karen’s spring collection revolved around the beauty of nature and the twenty first century woman.  The blend of dark lightning and soothing music took the spectators on a breathtaking journey, forcing them to forget the New York cacophony outside the Cedar Lake Warehouse, and to explore the world’s magnificent wonders.

The pastel colors of the line imitated the seas, the mountains, the prairies, the beaches, the forests, and the skies of our thrilling environment.  For this spring, Donna Karan clearly enjoyed playing with the shape and size of her classical silhouettes, influenced by the volume of the clouds, the movement of the waves, and other natural phenomenon’s. The designer manipulated the length, and the front and back of each dress to give it fluidity, passion and sensuality.  Materials in the line varied from sheer jersey, to lace, to suede to shredded raffia, allowing certain pieces to have exquisite details such as ruffles.

For the evening wear, Karan sprinkled pailettes on aqua marine and tan gowns, or combined a peach flowerlike design with navy blue dresses.  Furthermore, the accessories, made by Stephen Jones, mirrored the transparency, lightness and delicacy of glass and water. With Lucite wedges, head pieces and cuffs the pieces appeared modern yet elegant.  However, the collection did lack office wear, which is usually a Donna Karan forté. Nonetheless, the fashion house offered a thrilling experience using colourful shades of our own earth. Praising the designer along with Washington Square News was campaign girl Ashley Greeneand Bianca Jagger.
