Lela Rose Spring/Summer 2013

Lela Rose’s dream girl isn’t actually a girl so much as she is a lady. Delicate florals and prim tea dresses are her bread and butter, and this season was no exception.

Boxy separates rendered in peach and lime tweeds opened the show, but they felt oddly passé and out of place compared to the rest of theultra-feminine collection. Soon, however, the show fell back into a comfortable groove – one that the former Mrs. Betty Draper would approve of, no less. Modest shift dresses packed a punch with camo, floral, and digital prints, and wear-to-work staples received an update with neon seaming. Frocks were topped with a floral lace overlay, dusted with a metallic shimmer, or draped with glitzy chains. A series of three stunning high-low hemmed gowns in cream, ivory, and silver closed the show with a flourish. A sky blue brocade dress with a high neckline and a swingy skirt had every camera in the room raised: it was the clear crowd favorite. The very next number, a 1950s-style glimmering midi painted with a spray of flowers was also well-received.

According to Rose, hair is effortless this season: a bedhead-style pony with a center part will do. But the makeup was hardly understated: high-octane sunflower yellow shadow in and around the inner corners blended out into a moody mauve along the lids. There wasn’t a jewel or accessory in sight on the runway, save for ankle-strap wedges from Payless.

Rose has an eye for beautiful fabrics and shapes. But this season, her thoughts appeared scattered. Despite strong separates and lavishly-executed eveningwear, the collection lacked cohesion. Her newest ventures into sporty separates fell flat, while her signature dresses felt stale. While this collection may not have been her strongest in recent years (Fall 2012 was a retro dream), her customers hardly are short on elegant options for Spring.
