What’s in your bag?

Steinhardt sophomore Jasmine Yook demonstrates the characteristics of a communications professional by the contents of her Jansport Backpack. Yook is co-president of NYU’S Communications Club, a peer adviser for freshmen in the Media, Culture and Communication program and a business development associate at Sawhorse Media. With such a jam-packed schedule, this social media enthusiast invites WSN into her communications-focused, professional, academic and extracurricular life and shows how she keeps everything organized.

1. Moleskine Notebook

Yook described her Moleskin notebook as her “brain on paper.” She uses it to keep her academic assignments, internship and club events and peer adviser responsibilities organized in one place. Yook uses the notebook to take notes during her monthly peer adviser meetings and to jot down any ideas she has for the Communications Club.

2. TweetDeck

When Yook opens her Macbook, TweetDeck is the first application that appears on her screen. She is always multitasking, and she manages the Twitter accounts for Sawhorse Media, a startup company focused on the uncovering of the best on the social web. Sawhorse Media created the Shorty Awards, which are known as the Oscars of Social Media awards, and Muck Rack, a database of verified journalists on Twitter for public relations and communications professionals. Yook frequently sends out tweets for Shorty Awards to promote the social agencies that will be recognized, various award categories, members of the Shorty Awards Jury and brands that have received the award.

3. Macbook and iPhone

Yook said her laptop and iPhone play an important role in balancing her academic,
personal and professional life. Whether she is answering emails from her Sawhorse Media account, keeping her calendar systemized with iCal or tweeting, it is important for Yook to stay connected in all platforms of her life.

4. Pink Analog Camera

Even though Yook is connected to many social media platforms and is an avid iPhone user, she still keeps a bright pink analog camera handy in her bag. Yook loves to take photos everywhere she goes — around New York, at the events she attends for her internship or of the guests speakers she features at her Communication Club events. She also posts these pictures onto her personal blog. Her pictures are a fun way for people to get know her and to learn about the things she does in New York City.
