Mara Hoffman Spring/Summer 2013

Last spring, designer Mara Hoffman took us to South America for her “Shaman gaucho” themed fall 2012 line infused with spiritual patterns and tapestry motifs. This season, the designer greeted us with an “Aloha” and transported her audience to the tropical beaches of Hawaii for an effervescent and vibrant spring 2013 collection.

Strumming the ukulele while clad in matching neon green shift dresses were three female musicians, who opened the show and set the tone for a tropical ambience. In anticipation for an invigorating spring season, Hoffman fully embraced the two skills she knows best: color and pattern. Known for her lively prints, the designer took on a neon color palette and created pieces in geometric and kaleidoscope motifs.

The first piece to emerge was a multi-color cording applique caftan in sky blue, mint green, and pale pink. Bustiers, halter gowns, and bathing suits followed, some in tribal prints reminiscent of patterns from previous collections. The most standout garment was a sleeveless, sexy, and whimsical beaded shields chiffon gown, a refreshing breath of air after a too casual lineup. The top of the gown, structured in the shape of a shield, featured a beaded vertical stripe and trimming of neon pink outlined in teal. Swimwear returned once again to Hoffman’s catwalk, after debuting in 2008, this time in a vibrant mix of cut-out one-pieces and underwire bandeaus.

Hair was crimped and loose, parted to the side and accessorized with a palm fran. Aside from a bold red lip, the makeup was subdued and natural.  Nails were painted in bright neon and metallic shades to match the vibrancy of the garments.

From caftans and bandeaus to shift dresses and board shorts, Hoffman designed a collection with pieces suitable for any Hawaiian adventure, whether surfing the shores or relaxing poolside. Even though a wintry season is approaching, Hoffman’s message was quite clear: look on the bright side and get ready to say “aloha” to spring.
