As WSN reported today, NYU will do more to help students reduce the costs of textbooks in compliance with the Higher Education Opportunity Act. We are happy to hear that students will be informed of required texts and their costs during registration, allowing ample time to find cheaper books.

We are also pleased that NYU will strive to provide more used books in the bookstore as well as cheaper alternatives, like digital textbooks.

We realize that many professors will find the new requirements a bit restrictive when they try to plan a course months in advance. It is understandable that some professors will change the required texts before classes start. But as long as students receive ample notice, this should not pose a significant problem.

It's no secret that buying new textbooks at the NYU Bookstore is most often not the most economical option. It is only right that the university tries to offer students the best price when it comes to course materials. Costs for textbooks add up quickly and students should not view their own campus bookstore as the most expensive option.
