Students aboard the Spirit of New York were treated to breathtaking views of Manhattan Friday night as they sailed along the Hudson River. The glamorous cruise was part of the Inter-Residence Hall Council's 14th annual "Elegance on the Water" semi-formal dance.
"It's so pretty," Tisch freshman Alexandra Steven said. "I can't believe I'm finally going on a cruise!"
Passengers strolled along the boat's deck as a D.J. entertained the dancing crowds inside. Meanwhile, a buffet served those looking for food and drinks.
Many veterans of the event think that "Elegance" has improved with each successive year. For the first time in 14 years, the event was sold out.
"I've never see the dance floor so filled up; there's a lot more people," Steinhardt senior Heidi Schoenenberger said. "And it's a nicer boat as well."
"No matter how good it is, what couldn't go right in a boat?" Stern senior Gabrielle Singh said.
Gallatin sophomore and IRHC programming chair Olivia Baackes was pleased by the turnout.
"It's our last big event of the year, a way to wrap it all up," she said. "It definitely looks like we succeeded. Everyone's having so much fun."
The success of the event gave Baackes encouragement for planning future events, and she said the event's success tells her that IRHC is "doing something right."
"IRHC is one of the largest student-run organizations on campus, and creating community at NYU is something we pride ourselves on," she said. "'Elegance' on the Water does just that, and lets 300 residents dress up, act a little fancy and have an amazing evening."
