Four bands, including !!! (pronounced "chk chk chk"), highlighted a benefit concert Thursday night at NYU's Eisner and Lubin Auditorium in the Kimmel Center for Student Life to raise money for cancer research.
The collaborative effort between the NYU Program Board, Inter-Residence Hall Council and American Cancer Society, "Rage Against Cancer" also featured Darwin Deez, A Beacon School and Ultra Violet Live winner EMEFE.
All proceeds from the event went to benefit Relay for Life.
"The hope is that this will start a new tradition of Program Board and IRHC throwing a huge benefit for Relay for Life," said Emily Soukas, a CAS sophomore and one of the sponsorship chairs for Relay for Life.
Alex Heald, the IRHC president, hopes to continue working with Relay for Life in future years.
"This event really has two main goals," Heald said. "To build community and to start an annual tradition to raise money and awareness for a cause."
Miles Arntzen, whose band, EMEFE, released a new free EP on their website
after winning UVL, was happy to be a part of both the concert and the cause.
"It's great because it's a benefit and also a great way to get new fans," he said.
LSP freshman Victor Grajski originally bought a ticket to see headliners !!!.
"I didn't even know it was a benefit until right before the show but I think it's an awesome idea, especially if cool bands like !!! and EMEFE come out," Grajski said.
By the time !!! was halfway through their set, the event had sold nearly 230 tickets and earned additional funds to donate from T-shirt and food sales.
"Next year we want to go even bigger and better," Heald said.
