One of the NYU trolleys on Route B stops to pick up passengers on Broadway.

NYU has yet to make a formal announcement, but if you frequent the NYU buses, you've probably noticed it: The routes and schedules have been significantly revamped since last year.

Five NYU bus routes — A, B, C, D and E — were in operation this past school year. Since then, the Department of Public Safety has eliminated all but the B and E routes.

The A route, which used to service the former Water Street residence hall, closed in conjuction with the expiration of NYU's lease on the dorm at the end of the 2008-09 school year. The C and D routes have also been eliminated. Route C provided service to graduate housing in Stuyvesant Town and the East Village area, while Route D provided service west of Washington Square Park, including Greenwich Hotel residence hall. Each of the remaining routes, B and E, have been modified to provide service to each of these locations.

The B route, which formerly served Broome Street and Lafayette Street residence halls exclusively, will now connect to Greenwich Hotel, replacing the D route with 11 stops to the dorm on Mondays through Thursdays, roughly every one-and-a-half to two hours. The E route will no longer include a stop on Third Avenue and 14th Street near Coral Towers residence hall. And a new stop has been added on 12th Street and First Avenue to serve residents in Stuyvesant Town, said Fred Barlow, the department's assistant director for training, transportation and administration. He added that the department has increased the number of trips on the schedule to accomodate a projected increased ridership.

Despite these changes, NYU has made no formal announcement of the new routes. The Department of Public Safety has updated online schedules on its website, but the site still features last year's transportation map. Also, neither the service announcements page nor the mailing list provides any information on the route changes, and no postings have been made outside the main bus stop at 715 Broadway or on the buses themselves.

Stern senior Yoon Jung Kim said she wished the university had better publicized the changes.

"I called the Student Resource Center a couple days ago after hoping the site would be updated or something, and the girl I talked to there seemed unsure of herself," Kim said.

When asked what steps Public Safety had taken to inform riders about the changes, Barlow said the department would "continue to make every effort to notify passengers of service changes."

In addition to the route changes, the schedules themselves have changed. Based on feedback from riders, according to Barlow, the schedules will no longer list what time a bus will arrive at any given location along the route, except for major loading stops. He said this was prompted by passengers complaints about inaccuracate timelines.

Barlow added that drivers are still required to stop their buses at scheduled locations and that the department uses GPS to monitor and investigate compliance with their policy.

Barlow said ridership on Route E traditionally has been higher than the one on Route B. As a result, the larger transit buses will continue to be assigned primarily to Route E, and trolleys will be assigned primarily to Route B.

While mid-semester changes are uncommon, Barlow said there are "no time restrictions as to when adjustments that might be warranted would be implemented" and that the department will "closely monitor load factors" to determine whether it should make changes — including restoration of additional service — to the schedules and routes.

He also said that the department welcomed rider feedback on the issue.

I agree with these cuts! All the further "off campus" dorms are served, and people who live in Union Square HAVE to learn to walk to campus without complaining if they're going to survive in this city. Take it from a commuter and suck it up! NYU doesn't pay for my $89 Metrocard every month.

New York University’s Campus Transportation division has announced modifications to the campus-wide bus fleet scheduling beginning this Fall. Consistent with scheduling change notifications in the past, the notifications of this Fall’s schedule modifications were placed on the Campus Transportation web site (http://www.nyu.edu/public.safety/transportation) prior to the beginning of the school year. Additionally, these schedule changes were communicated to the IRHC representatives during Welcome Week as well as to our RAs at their summer orientation meetings. Passengers from Stuyvesant Town now receive service on Route E, and passengers from the Greenwich Residence Hall now receive service on Route B. The changes in scheduled route service were prompted in part by economic conditions, and in part in support of the University’s ongoing sustainability initiatives.

As a result, buses and trolleys will travel approximately 22,500 fewer miles, saving 5,600 gallons of diesel fuel annually. Going forward, this represents a 22% reduction in diesel fuel consumption fleet-wide, which equates into a green-house gas reduction of 53 metric tons carbon annually. This is equal to taking 10 average US cars off the road annually or the equivalent of the energy use of 8 average US homes.

Additionally, approximately 8,700 fewer bus and trolley trips will arrive and depart from 715 Broadway during Fiscal Year 2010 vs. Fiscal Year 2009, representing a decrease of 28% of large vehicles traveling through lower Manhattan neighborhood.

It is important to note that overnight Safe Ride service has in fact been enhanced in response to passenger feedback: trolleys connect the busiest locations on Thursday mornings in addition to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings. Otherwise, Safe Ride service for the current academic year has not been changed.

Back in 2004/2005 the bus system also had GPS placed on it. As it turns out, the drivers RIPPED OFF the GPS systems so their busses couldn't be tracked! I only was told this b/c at the time I was on IRHC and had been involved in some "students and transport" committee for residents.

the "sustainability" line we have been given by the University so far this semester is simply a keyword for "We are cutting student services and pretending it is because we are going "green" when we would really rather funnel our money to pointless crap like getting new elliptical machines in Palladium and a new Third North dining hall"

I know that no amount of negative student feedback will ever change their decisions, but I would appreciate them coming clean and letting us know that they decided to forgo basic student services in favor of "prettying up" the campus.

we pay more than $13000 for housing and yet NYU is cutting back on buses and trolleys. are you kidding me? no wonder the housing retention rate is so low for upper classmen. and no christopher, sustainability is no excuse to eliminate free printing, cut back on bus routes, and other fringe benefits nyu students used to get.

So the 1st Ave and 12th street stop on route E is only on the northbound bus?
