Fourth update: 11:50 p.m.

Minutes before 9 p.m. on Sunday, two taxi cabs crashed into the scaffolding built next to the GAP store near Broadway and Eighth Street.

An SUV taxi cab was headed southbound on Broadway when another sedan taxi was turning right onto Broadway from Eighth Street. The sedan taxi attempted to overpower the SUV and the two vehicles hit each other.

Six people who were in the taxis were taken to St. Vincent's hospital; their injuries were not fatal. One passenger was extricated from a vehicle by firefighters on the scene. There were no other injuries.

Initially, the scaffolding remained intact and all the pedestrians underneath were able to get to safety. Fifty feet of scaffolding fell a few minutes later.

According to the NYC Department of Buildings website, a partial stop work order was made in July on 752 Broadway, where the crash took place. The complaint has since been resolved.

A construction crew will be working throughout the night to clean the debris and plans to be finished by 5 a.m. A worker from the Springs Scaffolding Company, who own the wrecked scaffolding, said construction to rebuild it would begin at 7 a.m. According to the Department of Buildings' representative on the scene, clean-up will continue throughout the night in preparation for the morning rush hour. Police have blocked off Broadway between Eighth Street and Astor Place to traffic.
