The men's wrestling team split their four matches at Saturday's John Reese Duals in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

The Violets dropped their first two team matches, falling to King's College and host Wilkes University. They won just two matches against Wilkes in a 31-6 loss and dropped their final four matches against King's to turn a 12-9 lead into a 19-12 defeat. But the Violets bounced back to soundly defeat York (PA) College and Mount St. Joseph College to finish with a 2-2 record at the meet.
The Reese Duals were an important early-season test for the Violets, as three of their matches were against conference opponents (Wilkes, King's and York Colleges). Coming off the heels of a grueling Ithaca Invitational, maintaining a good performance was an unspoken concern for the NYU grapplers.
By all accounts, the team rose handily to meet their challenge. Junior co-captains Matt Magill (165 lbs.) and Gregg Martino (141 lbs.) were 3-1 on the day; Martino won all of his conference matches and was the only Violet besides junior Steven Contino (133 lbs.) to earn a victory against a Wilkes opponent. Senior Kyle Christensen (125 lbs.) also went 3-1 in the Duals as well; his only loss was a 5-2 decision against Scott Mantua of Wilkes.
"There was a lot of competition," said sophomore Steve Massey (174 lbs.), who saw his first action of the year in the Duals and went 2-1 on the day. "We got off to a slow start, but we definitely picked it up."
The team's work ethic has been consistently superb, and Magill said he believes it will pay off when some of the injured wrestlers come back to the mat. The return of those veterans will also help out the team's young roster, most of whom are seeing a lot of action despite being new to collegiate-level competition.
"We're still real young, got a lot of freshmen starting," Magill said. "Some of them didn't get results this weekend, but they still wrestled tough. As they get more experience and the guys [who are injured] come back, I think they'll definitely get better as the season goes on."
