(And by the way, who says THIS is (or was) a "peacetime decade", since it kicked off with an attack by foreign terrorists on our soil and is winding down with TWO (count 'em) foreign wars-- and that's just the ones the U.S. is directly involved in.) Further back, check out the 1850's (Dred Scott, Bleeding Kansas, John Brown's Raid and the rest of the run-up to the Civil War), 1870's (massive financial panic, Reconstruction, the aforementioned Indian Wars, etc.), and 1890's (another panic, labor unrest, etc.) And let's not forget the 1970's--my God, just the music (disco, anyone?) and the clothes were bad enough to qualify on those points alone!
