Actually, I believe the point of the story was spelled out in the byline, "Lifestyle clashes keep Sara Stone from returning to her family in Missouri". So she isn't one of the 30% of transsexual kids that commit suicide or one of the ones that were kicked out at 12 and had to turn to sex work. Maybe like so many other students she has found ways to scrape by and try to better herself with a higher education. That's supposed to be the goal, isn't it? Good for her, she has what it takes. I have known a number of people that have had to overcome this medical condition. By far the most painful part is when their families or other loved ones, the people they trusted the most, reject them based on ignorance and bigotry. That sense of betrayal and the outright hatred from those that are supposed to love you is magnified during the holiday season. That, I believe, is the point of the story.
