On a recent night, a group of freshmen girls (and several boys) on the ninth floor of Hayden residence hall fought each other for a spot at the window in a dorm room. They all pressed their faces against the glass, straining to catch a glimpse of someone a few floors below in the building behind Hayden.
The word was spreading — Jude Law had officially moved in next door.
"We didn't even know he lived here," Tisch freshman Erica Rose said. (Her room is where the students gather to spy.) "I just came home one day and the entire floor was in my room staring out the window," Rose said.
Law is currently playing Hamlet in the Broadway rendition of the play and is living in the Village for the duration of its run. He moved in next door to Hayden toward the end of September, and since then Jude-watching has become something of a sport in the residence hall.
Gallatin freshman Elizabeth Connaret said she has seen Law "reading, doing nothing, being lazy." She added: "He was working out once."
He is most visible to Hayden residents when out on his balcony, often with his personal trainer or his children.
Initially, there was a lot of buzz in Hayden surrounding Law. Those lucky students in rooms with a view of Law's apartment would invite their friends over when he came outside and take some paparazzi-style shots of their famous neighbor. But it's been a few months since he moved in, and students say the excitement is starting to die.
"Celebrities live here all the time, it's not a big deal," LSP freshman Katherine Gannon said. "But because he lives next to Hayden, people make a bigger deal out of it than they usually would if they just saw him on the street."
LSP freshman Bryan Hall said he feels bad for Law.
He said: "He moved in next to a freshmen dorm, so he'll always be ogled by freshmen girls."
